PENANG STATE - MERDEKA OPEN 2003 CHAMPION!!!

Above all expectations, Penang State team squeezed through the giants, outplaced other strong contenders for the Best State Prize with 19 points from 7 matches. This year, the Malaysian Team, represented by strong national players battle their wits against the Chinese and Singaporeans, in the pre-SEA games event to be held soon as chess is making its debut in the SEA Games calendar.

Penang State Team 2003

It was truly remarkable (with lady luck on our side) to win the Merdeka Open 2003 Chess championship. Started off the 1st round strongly, we later fumbled in the 2nd and 3rd round of the event to Sabah and Caissa Chess of Singapore. What was thought of as a disaster, against all odds we managed to stay with the pack, climb the ladder to finish the neck-to-neck race upon beating Johor 3.5-0.5 in the last round of the event. The crucial last round provided the gap to separate us from the others, overtaking many teams, some of whom we lost to in the earlier rounds and missing all the strong teams such as SEA Games Squad, China EcoSem and Knightmare of Singapore! What a close shave! Will be looking forward to next year's competition!

Individual Success

The main objective of the programme is to groom players of all ages. From the mainland to as far as Singapore, it is great to see new and upcoming players in the Penang chess arena. This programme has produced several quality players, some of whom are currently representing the state and national level.

Players such as Victor Hong is one of the clear examples of this programme. Started at a tender age, his effort from 2 years of extensive training has brought many fruitful achievements. His major breakthrough came at the National Juniors tournament as he emerged as the champion of the Under-12 Boys category, thus representing Malaysia in the annual Malaysia - Singapore Match.

With the growth of this progamme, upcoming players such as Oh Zhi Lin, Yeap Ken Joo, Christine Chuah and Lee Hai Sherng are some of the names to be observed in years to come.

I believe chess will grow to become a popular sport, just like football in years to come. With the help from both players and the Penang Chess Association, I am sure we can turn this game into fame. - Thean Keat

MSSPP 2003
--------------------------------------------

In this year (2003), remarkable performance from all categories were achieved. The most promising achievement was the U-12 girls' category, with Penang Chinese Girls' Primary dominating the 1st and 3rd placing in the individual event, securing the title of the team championship with an astounding result of 4 board prizes; a clean sweep in the girls' category.

The challenging U-12 Boys' team event proves that fighting spirit is the basic essential of any success. Against all odds, the average team of Penang Chinese Girls' Primary boys started off as an underdog, but soon became viscious as they were on the winning streak. The close encounter with Union Primary School ended in a marginal 2nd place to the leaders in a neck-to-neck race.

For the Girls' U-18 category, the sole upcoming player from SM Convent Green Lane, Tracy Yeoh surprised all other competitors with a 2nd place in the individual event. With the dominant forces of Union High School and Penang Chinese Girls' High School in the team event, Convent Green Lane led by Tracy Yeoh, secured a 3rd placing after hard fought battle against close rivals from all over Penang.

The surprise of the event came at the finale when Penang Chinese Girls' Primary School emerged 3rd placing as the best overall school, with 97 points collected from both individual and team event, creating history for the first time for PCG Primary under my guidance.
